In the United States, 85% of homeowners experience some level of hard water. Hard water can have serious effects on our homes – appliances and pipes wear down faster, dishes may not be cleaned efficiently and even our skin can become irritated! This is why combating hard water with water softening systems is an important part of our homes’ capabilities.
Southern Air wants to make sure your water remains soft and healthy for you and your home. You should be able to count on your whole-house water softener, but when you need water softener repairs or replacements, we’re the team to call.
Just as we have to maintain our vehicles and pay attention to how well they are functioning, water softeners need regular maintenance too. A few steps completed about once a year and your water softener can be healthier and last longer. Southern Air is happy to perform the following tasks on your water softener system to keep it in top condition, but any homeowner can also complete the maintenance themselves.
Your water softener uses salts as part of the process to remove minerals from your water. These salts can have impurities in them that can slowly build up in the bottom of the brine tank. The layer of sediment can clog the drain and prevent the salt from properly dissolving. Though it is an infrequent necessity, cleaning the tank does wonders for the function of the system and allows the salts to do their job.
First, the brine tank is drained and carefully disconnected from the resin column. The contents are emptied with care to prevent the water inside from harming plants.
Next, the grid plate is taken off and the inside of the tank is rinsed with dish soap and a brush. The deposits on the sides and bottom of the tank should be cleaned out at this time.
Lastly, the brine tank and grid plate are placed back where they belong. The system is refilled with salts and a regeneration cycle must be run either automatically or manually.
Resin beads in your tank are designed to attract minerals you don’t want in your water. Since they perform such an important function, it is a good idea to clean them. The owner’s manual for your water softener system will likely have the recommendation for a good cleaner you can use. The bottles of softener cleaner at the store will also likely have instructions on them for what kind to use.
Since you will have such a thorough view of the other parts of the system while you are cleaning them, take the opportunity to look for cracks or leaks. The lines for supplying water can also produce leaks or bubbles when something is amiss. You can replace these supply lines if they appear problematic.
In addition to a water softener, an electronic descaler can also improve your plumbing in Shreveport by eliminating the buildup of minerals on faucets and other systems. Learn more with our team!
Water softener repairs are not actually that common because the systems are very self-reliant. If they are set up correctly they tend to work fine on their own. However, when you do notice something odd about your system it’s a good idea to call a plumber sooner rather than later. Southern Air can provide an experienced plumber to help you quickly repair your water softener. These are some things you should call a plumber if you notice:
Installing or replacing a water softener can technically be accomplished by homeowners, but the mix of electricity and water can always pose problems.
