5 AC Troubleshooting Tips

At Southern Air Heating, Cooling & Plumbing, we understand how much of a hassle it can be to figure out what’s causing your AC to not work properly. That’s why we’re here to provide some tips to help you troubleshoot some common air conditioning problems.

If your AC won’t work and is leaving your Alexandria home uncomfortable, our team has the training and expertise to provide the help you need! Learn about DIY AC maintenance and repairs you can try when your system isn’t cooling as it should.

1. Check Your Thermostat

If your AC won’t turn on at all, it may have something to do with your thermostat. What you want to do first is check to see if the display is off or blank. If your thermostat won’t even turn on, it may need new batteries.

However, if it’s still on, you may find that the settings need to be changed. In order for your system to work properly, make sure it is set to “cool” rather than “heat.” This problem may be more common during the fall or spring when the temperature outside is in the process of changing from one extreme to another.

2. Identify Whether Your Refrigerant Is Leaking

Refrigerant is a substance that plays a vital role in your air conditioner’s function to cool your home and allow the heat and humidity to be released outside. If the refrigerant starts to leak, your AC’s performance will start to suffer.

For example, one of the potential causes of a frozen AC is leaking refrigerant. Refrigerant can be dangerous when mishandled, so call on one of our HVAC professionals to help solve the issue safely and efficiently!

3. See If The Condenser Is Frozen

Some problems with your AC unit can cause your system to freeze, preventing it from cooling your home as it should. Here are a few signs of trouble that could mean your system has become frozen:

  • The AC is always on but never cools.
  • Warm air starts coming out.
  • The thermostat’s temperature doesn’t match your indoor temperature.

If you notice these signs, check your system over and look for any signs of ice. If you find that your system is in fact frozen, turn off the power. This will allow the ice to melt off naturally. You don’t want to go in and scrape it off manually as doing so can damage elements of the unit.

Once you allow your AC time to thaw and the ice melts off, it should be ready to work again. However, if the ice isn’t melting or the problem persists, it’s time to call in a professional for a Louisiana AC repair.

4. Change Dirty Filters

Have you been changing out your air filter on a regular basis? If not, then this should be something you check as well. Typically, your HVAC system’s air filter should be changed every one to three months in order to prevent the system from clogging up with dirt and debris.

Not changing your filter can cause a variety of problems such as making your AC turn on and off frequently. This is something called short cycling. Short cycling can cause damage to your air conditioner over time and lead to increased energy bills.

If you need help changing your filter or repairing any damage caused by a clogged filter, our team is here to provide reliable maintenance and AC repairs done right!

5. Identify Causes For Any Unusual AC Smells

There are several things that can cause a weird smell to come from your unit. For instance, mold can start to grow in your system or air ducts. Additionally, a burning smell could mean there is a problem with the wiring.

Determining the cause of the smell can help you decide on the necessary next steps. If you are unsure of what’s causing the problem, it’s best to turn your AC off as soon as possible and call a professional.

In case your wires are burning, you don’t want it to become disastrous. Call any of our professionals to help inspect and repair the issue.
