[EASY] DIY Heater Maintenance

If you want your furnace to face the winter like a well-oiled machine, it needs to be ready to face colder temperatures and frequent use. With a few simple steps, you can do wonders for your heater’s performance — even if you don’t know much about furnaces!

Southern Air offers seasonal HVAC maintenance to keep your system healthy. However, your system needs more care than a couple of times a year. A DIY heater tune-up throughout the year is great for your system. The heater’s performance will be more efficient and provide better comfort. Check out some of the easy steps you can take to care of your heater.

Change The Air Filter

One of the biggest factors in your indoor air quality is a clean HVAC air filter. Take the time to find your furnace or heater filter and remove it. Either clean or replace the filter as the instructions state. Clearing this pathway will allow the new filter to catch particles in your air before they reach your lungs. It will also keep the air running smoothly through the system, alleviating any pressure the clogged filter was causing.

Clean The Outdoor Unit

While your HVAC unit is designed to withstand the elements, a little TLC goes far. Assess your outdoor unit for any debris or noticeable damage. Clear away tree branches, leaves and dirt from the unit and make sure it sounds normal when cycling. If you notice any dents or dings on the outside of the unit or the blades, you may need to schedule a professional evaluation or repairs.

Cleaning Out A Furnace

Furnaces create heat differently than HVAC systems, but they still need to be cleaned. Locate the panel on the furnace and open it. It’s usually secured with screws. Once you have access to the combustion chamber, you can check and clean several things.

Flames

Safely turn on your furnace and watch the color of the flames inside. Blue flames mean clean and healthy combustion. Yellow flames mean the burners are dirty. You’ll need to call a professional for this maintenance.

Vacuum

Shut off the furnace. You’ll notice the cavity has dust collected in it. Use the hose of a vacuum cleaner to suck out the dust. To reach the nooks and crannies of the area, try taping a clear drain line or tubing onto the end of the vacuum hose. Be careful not to dislodge anything or disturb anything delicate.

Seal Ducts

For any heating system, it’s important to make sure the air warmed and sent to your home is actually reaching your home. Take a look at your air ducts and test for any cracks or leaks. Use store-bought sealant to fill in the holes and prevent air from escaping throughout the winter season. You can also pursue professional help if your air ducts need major repairs or replacements.

Your Heater Health Depends On You

If you can complete these steps throughout the year, your heater will run much smoother. A professional furnace tune-up from Southern Air is also a good idea to ensure there are no looming repairs or inefficiencies. If you have questions about your heater maintenance or would like to schedule a tune-up appointment, give us a call!
